The Welsh Sheepdog in appearance is, medium to large sized and well proportioned. They can be rough or smooth coated, colours being black, black-and-tan, red, sable, blue merle or roan, with or without white markings. The ears may be pricked or folded forward. They have an alert expression, an active disposition and are highly intelligent. They are good guard dogs, barking at intruders, but are normally gentle and good with children.
Welsh Sheepdogs are very adaptable in their work. As sheepdogs they have a natural instinct for stock work and are capable of using their own initiative as well as being directed. They will spring to flush sheep from rocks or undergrowth and have tremendous agility and stamina. Their will to work is in-bred and they need an active life-style. This makes them adaptable for working in the alternative fields of Working Trials, Agility, Flyball, Heelwork to Music/Freestyle and Obedience training and competitions.
They are not suitable for pet ownership unless the owners are prepared to work the dogs minds and bodies regularly in other fields of work as mentioned above, or have experience with high energy dogs, such as other herding type dogs.
